A flyer for something that was ours.
I designed the first Resonance Sound System flyer in 1996, when I was sixteen. I had gone straight into the graphic design industry after leaving school and was already working at Sinclair, gaining design and pre-press experience.
A group of my best mates and I decided buying our own sound system was a sensible thing to do. Resonance was born, and I designed the flyer for our first event at Ketts Park Hall.
02 / Getting people through the door
Design it. Print it. Get it out there.
There were no Facebook events or social-media campaigns to lean on. We printed the flyers and handed them out to let people know about the night.
Oldskool, Hardcore, Hard House, Drum N’ Bass and Jungle were part of that world. The flyer belongs to its time, and that is part of its character.
03 / Looking back
One of the places it began.
At forty-six, looking back at something I designed at sixteen brings back the people and the excitement as much as the artwork. Great mates, loud music and enough confidence to put on our own rave.
It was one of my earliest pieces of independent design work: using the skills I was learning professionally to make something happen outside work. That connection between design and doing still matters to me.
